How to Create a Gallery Wall
Which prints go together?
A gallery wall is one of the most rewarding things you can do for a room — but knowing where to start can feel daunting. Here’s how to build a collection of prints that feels considered, cohesive and entirely your own.
Pair by colour
The simplest way to create harmony is through a shared colour palette. Look for prints that carry the same tones — whether that’s a recurring sage green, a warm ochre, or a soft botanical cream. They don’t need to match exactly; a family of related tones will feel more natural than a perfect match.
- Try pairing warm-toned prints (terracotta, ochre, coral) together
- Cool greens and botanicals sit naturally alongside each other
- Neutrals — cream, stone, off-white backgrounds — act as connective tissue between bolder prints
Pair by mood
Beyond colour, prints have a feeling. Some are bold and graphic; others are delicate and quiet. Mixing the two can work beautifully if there’s a thread connecting them — botanical subject matter, a similar palette, or a shared sense of stillness.
- Calm and considered — pair loose botanical studies with soft floral prints
- Bold and layered — combine graphic colour-block prints with more detailed illustrations
- Maximalist — embrace pattern and abundance; let prints overlap in mood and subject
Mix sizes with intention
A gallery wall with all the same size can feel flat. Varying the scale adds rhythm and movement. A common approach is to anchor the arrangement with one or two larger prints (A2 or A1) and build around them with smaller pieces (A4 or A3).
- Start with your largest print and work outwards
- Keep even spacing between frames — 5–10cm is a good guide
- Lay the arrangement out on the floor first before committing to the wall
