Hello, I’m Catherine
I’m an artist and textile designer based in Folkestone, on the Kent coast. For more than 20 years, I’ve been creating artwork shaped by colour, pattern and the things I notice around me.
Everything begins in my studio, with sketches, painted papers and ideas that slowly find their way into prints, fabrics and pieces for the home.
The story behind Kitty McCall
Kitty McCall is named after my grandmother. I started the brand in 2011 as a way of bringing my artwork and patterns into people’s homes.
Before that, I worked in a print studio creating designs for the international fashion market. It taught me how colour, scale and pattern can completely change the feeling of a design, and those ideas still sit at the heart of my work today.
Over the years, my designs have travelled further than I could have imagined. A print I created was worn by Michelle Obama, and a chair featuring one of my patterns appeared in Penny’s apartment on The Big Bang Theory. My work has also been used across fabric, wallpaper, greetings cards and homeware, as well as finding its way into homes around the world.
For almost a decade, Kitty McCall had a physical shop in Folkestone. It was a colourful, ever-changing space where I could bring the different sides of my work together. Today, I work from my studio, focusing on new artwork, prints, textiles and collaborations.
What shapes my work
Inspiration often starts with something ordinary: a plant noticed on a walk, an unusual colour combination, an old textile, a garden or a room that feels full of life.
I’m drawn to work that has energy without feeling temporary. My collections move between bold graphic patterns, decorative vessels, imagined botanicals and landscapes, but colour is the thread running through all of them.
I don’t feel the need to stay within one fixed style. Each collection gives me somewhere new to go while still feeling part of the same world.
From an idea to finished artwork
Most pieces begin with drawing and painting. I build up shapes, lines and layers of colour, moving elements around and experimenting with scale until the composition begins to feel balanced.
Some ideas become individual artworks. Others develop into groups of prints or repeat patterns for fabric. I enjoy seeing how one starting point can move in several different directions.
The finished prints are produced using fine art giclée printing and fade-resistant inks. Each one is made to order, with framed options prepared ready to hang.
Art made to be lived with
I have always collected art, often before I had the perfect place for it. The pieces I love have moved with me through different homes and different stages of life.
That is what I want my own work to become for someone else: something chosen because it creates a feeling or connection, and something they continue to notice and enjoy over time.
A home does not need to be finished all at once. It can grow slowly, one meaningful piece at a time.
